Is a hot-water problem plumbing or electrical?
“No hot water” is a symptom, not a complete diagnosis. The safest starting point is to record what the property is experiencing without opening the unit or touching wiring.
What to observe from a safe position
- Whether there is no hot water, reduced temperature or fluctuating temperature
- Whether all outlets are affected or only one
- System location and any visible water near the unit
- Whether cold water is normal and other electrical circuits are affected
- Model information visible on the outside of the unit
Do not remove panels, adjust internal controls or touch a unit that is wet, damaged, smoking or sparking. If there is immediate danger, move away and contact emergency services.
